I read my morning scripture in the book of the Acts of the Apostles where Paul was taken prisoner and on his way to Rome. I pause at this verse,
“The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage . . . ‘ “
I wonder how many days and nights the Lord stood near me and spoke the same message? Was I in a state to hear Him? Was I wrapped in my self-focus and self-pity so that I could not recognize the Voice? Possibly.
Oh Lord of lords, open my ears to hear You more than any other distracting noise or racket. Open my spiritual eyes to see You standing near in my prison cell.
Help me take courage from You, the Captain of my faith, the victorious One. Give me strength to endure, patience in the battle, hope for the future.
And let me recognize Your presence when You, the comfort for my heart, are standing close by.
Sunday grace.
