Day 23 of 40 Days to Passover and Resurrection Weekend

Speak words that encourage and build others up, especially to your own family

100_1774 The last part of Ephesians 4:29 says we should speak words that are “good and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace, God’s favor, to those who hear it. (AMP) One translation says “Say only what helps, each word a gift” (The Message).  Another says “that it may minister grace to the hearers”(KJV).

We have already been encouraged to Speak Life on our 40-day journey by my friend Robin.  We can always use an extra reminder, yes?  So let me hone it down a little closer to home.  And by that I mean those who live with you.  In your house.

I confess that I am my most real, unadulterated self at home.  I wear comfy clothes and house shoes.  I don’t always take time for make-up.  Sometimes my hair is disheveled and I’m just not that concerned about appearances.  No so when I head out the door to meet the world.

What I am saying is that my Sweet William sees me as I really am, on my good days and my bad days.  He sees me stagger to the kitchen in the early morning searching for the coffee pot.  He knows I don’t like conversation until after the first cup.  He has heard my rants and my heartaches along with my joy and laughter. He knows me.  He knows my words.  And more than anyone else in the world, I want him to see me as a real true Christian who fights the good fight and strives to be like Jesus.

I think my words reveal my inner heart very quickly.  From the wellspring of the heart the mouth speaks, right? I am practiced at guarding my words when I am in public places.  Unfortunately at home, my guard sometimes comes down.

I have a tiny green plastic soldier sitting on my kitchen window sill.  He reminds me to pray for the Lord to guard  my mouth and to to keep a watch over my words.

My prayer is that the words that come out of my mouth will build up and encourage my Sweet William first and foremost, that they will be grace to him, each one a gift. Will you join me and choose to be the encourager to those who know you best and love you the most?

The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life . . . Proverbs 10:11 NIV)

We are over half way through our 40-day journey.  Come on along for the rest of it, won’t you?
